Coalport Election Jug

Antique Coalport Twelve Apostles Election Jug - 1841 - Rare

A very rare Coalport "Twelve Apostles"
(Hill, Ormsby Gore, Darlington, Clive, Tomline, Disraeli, Botfield, Ackers, Forester, Gaskell, Whitmore and Pigot)
Election Jug 1841
This is of baluster form with a triple lip neck and decorated with the 'Loggerheads' (Shrewsbury coat of arms) and inscribed in gold with a record of the Conservative General Election victory and the twelve restored Conservative members to the County of Salop, which included Benjamin Disraeli, and inscribed with the retailer's name at the base of the handle 'Wildig Shrewsbury', all against a deep cobalt blue ground. The conservatives swept the board in the General election of 1841 in Shropshire and this success was marked with the issue of a large and extremely imposing porcelain jug thought by many to be the most impressive of all the election pieces produced at Coalport. Amongst the twelve members elected to represent Shrewsbury, Benjamin Disraeli was one of the two members elected to represent Shrewsbury in parliament and the Shropshire Conservatives deemed it somewhat of a coup that they managed to secure his services for their county town. Unfortunately for the Conservatives, Disraeli was absent from the celebrations which was undoubtedly a blow to their pride and through the term he seems to have involved himself little in the affairs of the borough, indeed later becoming a member for Buckinghanshire. Note: A pair of these were sold by Christie's for over £1000 in 2002
Height: 11 inches (28cm)

General Strike Truncheon

Antique Truncheon King George V
General Strike 1926

An antique wooden commemorative truncheon including Crown, initials G R, and armorial shield for the city of Bradford with banner motto "LABOR OMNIA INCIT", inscribed beneath "GENERAL STRIKE MAY 1926", with turned grip to handle, and leather strap, 39cm, (15.25") long. Mounted with leather wrist strap impressed with "HIATT'S BHAM " (Birmingham).
15.25 inches (39cm) in length.
The 1926 General Strike lasted ten days, from the 3rd to 13th of May. It was called by the General Council of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) in an unsuccessful attempt to force the British Government to act to prevent wage reductions and longer hours for coal miners. Winston Churchill was at this time Chancellor of the Exchequer, and Stanley Baldwin the Conservative Prime Minister. It is estimated that 1.5 million industrial workers, rallying under the Miners Federation motto of "Not a penny off the pay, not a minute on the day", took part. Acts of aggression by the strikers included the derailing of the 'Flying Scotsman' locomotive near Newcastle. The disturbances contributed to the establishment of the 1927 Trade Disputes and Trade Unions Act, which made all 'sympathetic' strikes illegal.

Vienna Bronze

Franz Bergman Cold Painted Bronze Mouse eating a cheese

This is a 1920s cold painted bronze mouse by Austrian Franz Bergman.
Franz Xaver Bergman (1861-1936) was the owner of a Viennese foundry who produced numerous patinated and cold-painted bronze figures.
Noted for his detailed and colour work, and signing either a 'B' in an urn-shaped cartouche or 'Nam Greb' - 'Bergman' in reverse.
These marks were used to disguise his identity on erotic works.
He was not a sculptor himself as often described wrongfully. There were many anonymous sculptors, hired temporarily by the workshops. At the turn of the 19th/20th Century there were about fifty workshops producing Vienna Bronzes.
'Cold painted bronze' refers to pieces cast in Vienna and then decorated in several layers with so called dust paint; the know-how for the mix of this kind of paint has been lost.
The colour was not fired hence "cold painted". The painting was carried out mainly by women working at home, a typical cottage industry.
Height: 2.5 inches
